You may decide on a color theme that could involve either matching shades or contrasting primary colors. Alternatively, you may prefer a combination of wood and leather: solid wood occasional and cocktail tables, and leather sofas and chairs, whether individual pieces or sectionals. Let's have a look at some options based on leather upholstery combine with solid American woods such as maple, oak and cherry.
Accents & Highlighting- Draw attention to a fireplace with overhead recessed lighting or track lighting fixtures. Alternatively, wall sconces on either side of the mantel will both emphasize the fireplace and offer more lighting for the entire room. An up light situated behind the object can highlight pedestals, figurines or floor plants. Add additional layers with multi-tiered hanging lamps or wall/ceiling wash lights. Accent lights placed in alcoves, corners or closed in spaces will accentuate a specific area or piece and give the room a larger appearance.
Your living room need not be furnished and decorated to a specific historical period, but should at least appear to be matched and perhaps follow a certain theme in terms of color or period. For example, Amish furniture looks best in a plainly decorated room, and would look out of place with lush drapes, heavily patterned carpets or event brightly painted walls.
There is more to living room furniture than just the seating of course. You will also have some cabinets that you will use for display, holding drinks and glasses and also perhaps a bookcase, or secretaire.
Before buying living room furniture, room space planning often pays by helping you to avoid clutter. If there was one thing the Victorians were good at, it was clutter. They seemed to fill every inch of available space with furniture and accessories and forget that people needed space to walk in!
Tables are also essential pieces of living room furniture. Coffee and cocktail tables tend to be placed in from of sofas while end tables sit at either side of chairs or sofas. Accent pieces can be set against walls or in the general living space. It has now become all but impossible to visualize in your mind's eye what your room will look like with all this furniture.
